Due to weather, the start of the 2018 Ivakkak Dogsled Race has been delayed. The new starting date is Tuesday March 20, 2018 at 10am. The Trail Coordinator, Charlie Alaku along with 5 support crew members left Kangiqsujuaq on Wednesday, March 14 and have been stormed out at a camp called Navvaraaluq, which is located inland between Kangirsujuaq and Kangirsuk. After 30 hours of no communication, Charlie called home to tell everyone they are all safe and sound.
Johnny Oovaut, Ivakkaks Race marshal along with 2 other support crew members have been stormed out in Kangirsik. The three crew members left Quaqtaq on Thursday March 15 early in the afternoon in whiteout conditions and arrived safely in Kangirsuk that same evening.
Currently, as of Saturday March 17, we have 7 teams on the ground in Tasiujaq, 4 POV team, 2 Kangiqsujuaq teams and 1 Tasiujaq team. We are still waiting for 3 Kuujjuaq teams, 1 Quaqtaq team and 1 Kangirsuk Team.
Kangirsuk has been hit with the worst of the weather, but is expected to die down by late Saturday evening.
