The 2016 Ivakkak racers are now blazing this year’s trail

Quaqtaq, March 31, 2016 – at 9:30 a.m. the first of twelve dog teams crossed the Ivakkak starting point. The community was present at the bay of Quaqtaq to help support and cheer on the teams vying for the win. The race is expected to last 10 days weather permitting. Community stops will be in Kangirsuk, Aupaluk, Tasiujaq with the finale in Kuujjuaq. There will be some land stops in between. This year’s Ivakkak race is about 450 KM in total.

Day one consisted of beautiful weather, blue skies and high spirits. Everyone is in good health except Harry Okpik who cannot take part in the race at this time. For now Adamie Micheaud, his previous mushing partner, has replaced Okpik.

The crew is fully loaded with all the necessary gear and are on their way to Aariak – 88 KM from Quaqtaq, the first checkpoint. They will overnight at Aariak and will depart tomorrow morning for Kangirsuk.
