Nunavik gears up for its 14th Ivakkak dog team race

(Kuujjuaq, QC, February 18, 2015) – The organizing committee is proud to announce the upcoming Ivakkak dog team race. This 14th race will hit this years’ Ivakkak trail on March 16th, 2015, departing from Kuujjuraapik heading up the Hudson Coast, stopping in the communities of Umiujaq and Inukjuak, with a Puvirnituq finish line. Dependent on weather the race is expected to last about 13 days

“Nunavik is happy to announce that Makivik is continuing its renowned Ivakkak dog team race. Our heritage is both celebrated and continued through dog teams, a culturally unique form of transportation for Inuit as dog teams were essential for our survival. Join us as the teams follow the paths of our ancestors,” says Michael Gordon, Makivik Vice-President.

Fourteen dog teams consisting of two-member partner mushers and between 10-12 dogs each come from Kuujjuaq, Tasiujaq, Quaqtaq, Puvirnituq and Inukjuak – all vying for the 14th Ivakkak championship cup.

A mandatory veterinarian and an Ivakkak support crew will follow the teams for their safety and wellbeing.

During the race updates will be provided on our website.
